Epson announces they will stop selling laser printers

30 November 2022

The Epson Europe press release announcing that they will no longer be distributing laser/toner printing equipment is being met with surprise in many quarters.  This press release coincided with the launch of the latest range of heat-free PrecisionCore multifunctions, which complete the Epson inkjet copier range: they now have office business MFPs in every segment of the market.

Epson have been selling monochrome A4 laser printers built by Fuji up to now, but they last launched one of these over five years ago.

They launched the first PrecisionCore WorkForce Enterprise A3 office copiers at about the same time.  Epson have been trumpeting the extremely low electrical consumption of all their PrecisionCore devices for years now.  PrecisionCore is not just heat-free, it is reliable, has fewer consumables and creates no emissions at all.

Epson EMEA’s senior vice president Rob Clark says: “The decision to leave the laser market has been inevitable. As a company we’ve committed to sustainable innovation and action, and laser printers don’t fit within that. They consume more energy than business inkjets and use more consumable parts.  Our printing business will instead focus 100% on piezo Heat-Free inkjet, leveraging our propriety technology to deliver efficient, sustainable print solutions for our partners and end users.

The announcement that Epson will stop distributing Fuji laser printers in four years’ time is completely logical - and foreseeable.
